Before our daughter Elara was born, my husband Edward and I loved moving—long walks, spontaneous plans, early flights, late dinners. We always imagined that parenthood wouldn’t mean stopping, just slowing down a little. Still curious. Still playful. Still us.
When Elara was seven months old, we decided to take our first big step as parents who go: a family trip to the Big Island of Hawaii.
We packed carefully.

The first evening in our hotel, after a full day of flights, time changes, and a very alert baby, we finally settled in. Elara finished her bottle. I walked to the sink—and froze.

It wasn’t.
